The Irish Criminal Bar Association held its annual Criminal law Update and AGM on the 11th of June 2016 in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone.

The conference was a huge success and thank you to all our current and new members for attending. The conference was chaired by Ms Justice Iseult O’Malley and Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring. Our speakers James Dwyer BL, Rebecca Smith BL, Sinead Skelly BL, Garnet Orange SC, Remy Farrell SC, John Berry BL, Karl Monaghan BL and Maurice Coffey BL gave engaging and interesting presentations on a wide range of subjects from parasitic accessory liability to organised crime.

Tributes were made by all to our much missed colleague, Colm O’Briain SC and also to recently departed colleagues and friends Stephen McCann, Brendan Nix SC, Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman, Mr Justice Paul Carney.

Our Chairperson Libby Charlton BL stepped down after two years in the role and Eoin Lawlor BL was elected by the new committee to sit as Chairperson. Libby Charlton lead ICBA over the last two years with determination and raised its profile and membership tremendously.

Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman: ‘Recent Developments in Admissibility’

Maynooth University Department of Law would like to invite you to a lecture by Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman, Supreme Court Justice.

The Judge will be discussing recent developments in the law on the admissibility of evidence, including the recent Supreme Court decision in DPP v JC  in which the Court held that evidence obtained unconstitutionally can now be admitted where officers of the State (i.e. An Garda Síochána) claim to have no knowledge of the breach.

The event will be chaired by Liam Herrick, Advisor to President Michael D Higgins and Honourary Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law. The Judge’s lecture will be followed by a response from Dr Claire Hamilton, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law.

The AGM and conference were a great success with over 80 attendees.  Chaired by the Honourable Mr Justice Birmingham the conference heard from Michael Dillon BL, Mícheál P O’Higgins SC, James Dwyer BL, Colm O’Briain SC, David Staunton BL, Geraldine Fitzpatrick BL, Libby Charlton BL and Maurice Coffey BL. Thank you to all those who contributed and attended.

  • 12th May 2015 “Post sentence mitigation: recent appellate Court practice and services available in custody”

The ICBA held an extremely interesting event on the use of new material in sentence appeals in the CCJ on Tuesday, 12th May. Mr Blaise O’Carroll SC, Vivien Geiran, the Director of the Probation Service and Mr Philip Larraghy, Director of Release gave presentations on their areas of expertise and members of the Irish Prison Service also gave invaluable insight into the workings of the prison system. Thank you to all those that attended and contributed to the event.

  • 25th April 2015 The ICBA held its annual conference in the Honorable Society of King’s Inns on Saturday the 25th of April. The Conference is entitled:

“Was Orwell an Optimist?

Cybersecurity, Constitutional Values and Personal Autonomy”

Chair and keynote speaker: Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman

It was an extremely interesting event and was attending by solicitors, barristers, members of the Gardai Siochana and members of the media.

  • Mary Rose Gearty SC delivered an Ethics CPD seminar to members and non-members.
  • The Department of Law in NUI Maynooth invites members to a Guest Lecture by Professor Francis Pakes entitled ‘Comparative Criminology in the 21st Century?’ on Tuesday 10th of March 2015. The Lecture will take place at 6.30pm in the Phoenix Building. North Campus in Maynooth. There will be a response by Liam Herrick, Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Law

The ICBA and the School of Law at University of Limerick will host a Joint Conference entitled ‘Sentencing in Ireland: Stakeholders’ Perspectives’. Annual Conference 2014

The Irish Criminal Bar Association recently held its annual conference at the Newpark Hotel in Kilkenny. The conference was entitled ‘Procedural and Substantive Developments in the Criminal Trial Process’. It was an extremely successful event with some very interesting and informative presentations given by members of the Bar. The conference was followed by the ICBA AGM where the new chairperson and committee were elected.
